There is a strong emphasis on food security and environmental clean-ups at this site. One of the first programmes initiated was a soup kitchen and participants have been busy establishing food gardens at every primary school in the area. Teams also distribute food hampers.
Among its activities, the environmental team has cleared land for gardening in an open space previously used as a squatter camp and continued with cleaning public areas such as police stations and public schools.
The infrastructure team has renovated the local police station, built a zozo for the soup kitchen and renovated the community hall.
Teams have also run health awareness campaigns and carry out home-based care. The social group has assisted people and children with registration for ID documents and birth certificates, and helped elderly people with cleaning cooking and doing washing.
They have also raised funds to donate blankets to orphans and other needy families.
A particular innovation at this site is the People's Centres, which have been established to improve service delivery to residents. Services provided at the six centres include customer care, trade licences, housing, and rates and taxes.
The centres are an essential line of communication between the community and the City of Johannesburg's municipal administration.
